Treasure Trail

"Oooooh!" Rodney reached for the small blue cube propped on his keyboard. He picked it up and it flashed twice before slowly opening up to reveal a hologram of a chocolate bar and an arrow pointing to the left.

"Check it, Radek," he said.

"Looks like a scavenger hunt sort of toy. Maybe you should take a break."

"I bet you planted this. You're just trying to get rid of me," Rodney said, suddenly suspicious. He clutched the cube protectively. "Then again...chocolate. I'm taking a break."

"It was not me," Radek said.

"Look, the arrow reorients as I move. It's like Ancient 'hotter/colder'. Neat." Rodney turned in place just to watch the hologram arrow move. "And besides, if it wasn't you, who was it?"

Rodney didn't wait for an answer, so he missed Radek rolling his eyes and sharing a bemused shrug with Simpson.

The blue cube led him to the mess hall, where he found a red cube. This one showed a hologram of two chocolate bars and another arrow. Half an hour later, Rodney had six multicolored cubes in his pocket and the promise of a large stack of chocolate bars on his mind. At every stop he was oblivious to the indulgent smiles and the looks he received that clearly said, 'you're a moron.'

The seventh cube showed twelve chocolate bars and flashed more insistently. It led him straight to Sheppard's door. He knocked.

"Sheppard!" he called. "Open the door. I should have known you were in on this!" He paused, looking down at the cube. "Hey," he said. "Wanna help me find my chocolate?"

The door slid open and Rodney stepped inside. Sheppard was sitting on the edge of the bed looking nervous. He glanced furtively at the stack of chocolate bars on the bedside table.

Rodney dropped the little cube, which bounced. He looked at Sheppard for a moment, then grinned. "I..." he started, then had to clear his throat. "I didn't actually require the bribe, you know."

Sheppard smiled back and reached for the bar on top of the stack.

"Drop it," Rodney said, stepping forward. "That's for later."
